Woof. What a week.
I actually went into an office one day this week. It was my first day in an office since March 6, 2020. I was actually on vacation the last week everyone else worked. So my break was even longer.
Tuesday night, I picked out my clothes and laid them all out in the living room. Underwear even.
I was super stoked. Got to go be a part of a brainstorming session for one of our more beer-like clients and their gaming efforts. To say I was prepared for this conversation is pretty much the understatement of this century.
I had totally forgotten about this until I got on the train to head in: In early 2001, I was at my first agency job back in Austin. My client was the Air Force. I spent one entire weekend playing NBALive, when it hit me. “The Air Force needs to be advertising in video games!”
I went in bright and early on that Monday, and pulled my boss and her boss into a conference room and I said, “I’ve figured it out! The Air Force needs to be advertising in video games. Like when you play basketball games, the ads on the scorers tables need to be for the Air Force. It needs to be the US Air Force player of the game. We need to own this space when no one else is!”
I got laughed out of the room and was told it was the dumbest idea. I remember being super upset. It really led to me disengaging at work for the first (of many) time in my life.
And then, 20 years later, I was recruited by one of the largest agencies in the world to bring that thinking to an even bigger global brand.
Not normally a positive person, but I will say, you should believe in yourself and your ideas even when others don’t.
Sometimes.

(side note: I have some great squares at the bar for this match, and one great square at the liquor store. Prizes are a Birthday Bourbon for the 1st and 3rd quarter and a Pappy for the half and final score. Cross those fingers.)
OK, that’s all I’ve got right now. I’ve got to head out for my weekly Friday night speakeasy pizza.
We’ve got a random Tuesday Man U- Brighton match, and Champions League this week. For that last one, I might have something up my sleeve.
Things I missed this week: footballers kicking cats, teammates defending cat kickers, managers defending cat kickers, fans punching players, Luis Diaz’ debut, Egypt - Senegal slugfest, et al. Let’s comment chat about all that. But my pizza is getting cold.
Take care of yourself, and each other.

Good luck on the squares! If’n you don’t win the Pappy, a guy I know might be able to set you up with some. Fella goes by the name of Wynn Duffy.
I was a Bengals fan for the first 35 or so years of my life, and quit on them the instant the Burfict/Jeremy Hill fumble game ended in 2016. Best decision of my life, although I really should have pulled the trigger when Montana hit John Taylor for the SB win. Or when those damned Steelers exploded Carson Palmer’s knee in the playoffs. (The result of that play was a 60 yard completion to Chris Henry, which I’ll not expound upon for the sake of propriety.)
In closing, Sadio should have been sent off for that dive in the AFCON final. There, I said it.
Champions League? What's that?
